(from the Kunza “tata-iu” meaning the weeping grandfather)

The Tatio geysers are in full activity at dawn making it necessary to set out on this tour very early, returning around midday.  At an altitude of 4200msnm, Tatio is the third largest geyser site in the world and the largest in the southern hemisphere.   At dawn the boiling water sprays out of the fumaroles almost a meter into the air.

After breakfast the daring can swim in the thermal swimming pool in the southern sector of Tatio.  On the way back to San Pedro there are plenty of opportunities for spotting wildlife -such as vicuñas and rare local birds - and enjoying the scenery as well as a visit to the hamlet of Machuca.
